After the activity at Utvær in Solund ended, Bulandet is the westernmost living fishing village in Norway.

In 2003, the Nordsjøporten road and bridge facility was opened. Previously there was a ferry connection from Askvoll/Fure/Værlandet to Bulandet. Now the ferry goes to Værlandet, and from there there is a road and bridge connection to Bulandet. Nordsjøporten has a total of six new bridges and 5,240 meters of new road.

The name Bulandet comes from bu as in rorbu or sjøbu. The main industry is still fishing and fish processing, but tourism also provides work and income and is a growing industry. There is a kindergarten and combined primary and secondary school in Bulandet, where children from Værlandet also go.
